The Obama Administration agrees, cellphone unlocking should be legal

unlock

Back in October of 2012, the Librarian of Congress decided to remove cellphone unlocking from the exemptions of the DMCA. This sparked much outrage and discussion in the cellphone community prompting a petition to be started on the White House website. The stipulation of the petition was that it needed to reach over 100,000 signatures in a 30-day period which would prompt the White House to respond directly to the petition.

Amazingly, the petition garnered well over the necessary amount, 114,000+ and recently we got our response. The response is a good one for people who believe in consumer choice …

Unlock iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4 on iOS 6.1 using Ultrasn0w 1.2.8

unlock

Ultrasn0w 1.2.8 has just been released for compatibility with iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4 running iOS 6.1. Once again, this update only adds 6.1 compatibility, it does not add compatibility for any of the newer baseband revisions. If you have an iPhone 4, this will only work if you have the 01.59.00 baseband. If you have an iPhone 3Gs, it will work on any of these basebands: 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and 06.15.00. If you have a 3Gs that has a newer baseband, you can install the 06.15.00 iPad baseband and then downgrade from 06.15.00 to 05.13.04 using Redsn0w.

AppleNBerry now offering permanent IMEI unlock for AT&T locked iPhones

imei

Often times, we refer our readers to AppleNBerry, the official reseller of the Gevey hardware unlock for certain iPhone4/4S firmware and baseband combinations. Unfortunately, the Gevey unlock is not compatible with all basebands so some users are still stuck with a locked device. Earlier this week, AppleNBerry began offering a new IMEI unlocking service which will permanently, and officially unlock your device without needing to jailbreak. Unfortunately, this is not an inexpensive solution. An IMEI unlock is going to set you back $150, but if you have an AT&T locked phone, with a baseband which is not unlockable, it may …

Downgrade 06.15.00 Baseband to 05.13.04 with Redsn0w 0.9.14b2 (Video Tutorial)

bb1

This is a video tutorial that will walk you through downgrading your iPhone 3G/3Gs from the iPad baseband 06.15.00 to 05.13.04 which is another Ultrasn0w compatible baseband that will allow you to unlock and use your GPS capabilities. It is very important that if you have a 3Gs and it was manufactured on or after the 35th week of 2011 you SHOULD NOT install the iPad baseband. Doing so will permanently brick your cell radio. You can tell when your device was manufactured by looking at the 3rd, 4th and 5th digits of your phone's serial. The 3rd digit is …

Nuance announces biometric device unlocking with Dragon ID

dragonid

Today, Nuance, the company behind the Dragon speech recognition software, announced a new biometric technology that will allow mobile device users to unlock their device with their voice. Now you might be wondering "what good is a passcode if you have to say it out loud?" Well, Dragon ID also uses your "voiceprint" to determine who you are. The technology is so accurate and secure that it is already used by banks and government institutions. Even Danny Ocean would have a hard time getting in.

With Dragon ID, your voice is your password. Simply set a password or passphrase …

unlock

For our readers who have updated to 5.1.1 using Sn0wbreeze 2.9.5, you may have noticed that even with a compatible baseband, Ultrasn0w does not work on 5.1.1. Until the iPhone-Dev Team releases an update to Ultrasn0w, you will have to install the Ultrasn0w 5.1.1 Fixer in order to get the unlock working. For your convenience, we have bundled the latest Ultrasn0w, MobileSubstrate and the Ultrasn0w 5.1.1 fixer into a single download.

The easiest way to install these deb files is to simply transfer the files to any folder on your phone using iFunBox, iExplorer or SSH and then installing the …

applenberry

Remember when we told you that there was a hardware method for unlocking iPhone4 on 5.1? Well it turns out that the Gevey Ultra for iPhone4 on 5.1 was actually reliant on the Loktar_Sun SAM unlock method. Now usually at iPhoneBlogr, we are quick to recommend AppleNBerry as the official reseller for Gevey SIMs. However, this is just despicable on their part. Fortunately they have stated that they will be refunding anyone who …
