Upcoming Semi-Restore tool to clean up your iOS install while retaining jailbreakability

UPDATE: SemiRestore has now been released, check out our SemiRestore tutorial!

A new tool has been announced Semi-Restore which should come as a huge relief to many jailbreakers. We've all been there, we jailbreak our devices, load them up with all the best jailbreak tweaks and apps only to be stuck with a sluggish iOS. The answer to this problem is to restore and only install the absolute necessities, but what do you do when the current iOS is not jailbreakable and your device cannot be restored without installing an unjailbreakable firmware?

Enter Semi-Restore, a tool which bills …

Pod2g and Planetbeing make some progress on the iOS6 jailbreak

We don't hear much in the way of jailbreak news these days, but as we pointed out earlier this month, there is definitely still progress going on behind the scenes. Last night, Planetbeing made a vague post about making progress with Pod2g. On what they had made progress on was not initially clear, but we hoped that it was something to do with the upcoming jailbreak.

But then early this morning, Pod2g replied to the tweet confirming that it was, in fact, the jailbreak that they had made progress on. Apparently the duo discovered 2 new vulnerabilities that will …

Google Maps for iOS6 now available in iTunes store

It seems as though ever since Apple ditched Google Maps for their own version of GPS mapping, rumors have been flying about Google releasing a standalone app in the iTunes App Store. I had been using iOS 5.1.1 up until recently, when I swapped my 4S for an iPhone 5 so I hadn't yet experienced Apple maps(sans some experimentation in the early beta versions). I have to say that I haven't really experienced any major issues with Apple maps in the few days I have been using it, however there have been loads of people loathing over the application on …

iPhone 5 Scratch Gate/Scuff Gate

Yesterday, we told you about the iPhone 5 Screen Gate. With the iPhone 5 being the lightest, thinnest, and sleekest smart-phone out there, users have discovered another  issue in Apple's latest device. This time its being called "Scratch Gate." The  iPhone 5 uses an anodized aluminum back plate instead of the Corning glass used in the 4/4S. Aluminum is a soft material to begin with, making it susceptible to wear and tear from daily use. Having it in your pocket with some change or keys might make the back side of your i5 look like it just came out …

iOS6 features and changes scheduled for release this fall

Today at WWDC, the largely anticipated announcement of iOS6, the newest mobile operating system from Apple, was announced. iOS6 is scheduled for release this Fall, but iOS6 beta 1 downloads are already live for Apple Developers if you can't wait to check it out. iOS6 brings a slew of new features such as improved Maps and Siri functionality, changes to iCloud and Safari and new Facebook and Twitter integration. It is compatible with the iPhone 3Gs, 4 and 4S, iPod 4G as well as iPad2/3.

As always, Apple has taken some ideas from the jailbreak world and included them …

iOS 5.1.1 update released to fix AirPlay and Network bugs

Today Apple released a minor incremental update to the iOS firmware for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch which fixes some bugs with networking and AirPlay as well as a few other things. As always, if you are waiting for the release of an untethered jailbreak, please do not update unless you have your SHSH blobs and are on an A4 device or lower. For those on A5+ devices on 5.1, you will want to wait until @pod2g has cleared the update before upgrading your own device since there is always the chance that they patched one or more of …

Apple working on patching SAM unlock method

Well, it has been a few days since the, now infamous, SAM Unlock method was released to the masses. As expected, Apple wasn't going to let this loophole fly for long. According to a Twitter post made my @musclenerd a few minutes ago, it seems as though Apple has already begun closing this loophole. For now, some users are still having success, but over the next few hours(presumably), less and less people will be able to unlock with this method until eventually it will be completely closed. If you have not yet unlocked your phone with this method and …

1980 Steve Jobs interview discusses humble beginnings

Since the recent passing of Steve Jobs, videos of his keynote speeches and rare and sometimes never before seen footage has been circulating around the internet so as to keep his memory and his words and his vision of the future alive. The video below is from an interview he did in 1980 in which he talks about the Apple1/Apple2 computers and the very early beginnings of Apple Computer Company.

In the video, he talks about his visit to a local public school where he got to talk to and watch 4th and 5th graders using his computers as if …

ih8sn0w discovers an APTicket loophole which allows downgrading iPad2 and iPhone4S from 5.1 to 5.0.1

Just a few minutes ago, @ih8sn0w the creator of Sn0wbreeze announced on Twitter that he has found a loophole in Apple's APTicket system which allowed him to downgrade his iPad2 from 5.1 to 5.0.1. He went on to say that the loophole not only works on the iPad2, but also the iPhone4S. Also, he has stated that once a new firmware is released for the iPad3, the loophole will also work to downgrade that device.

At this point, we don't have much information about this loophole or how/when it will be implemented into the the jailbreak tools, but there …

New iPad battery problems?

With the recent release of the New iPad, a few weeks back, iOS gamers, media editors and everyday users have been putting it through the ringer. From the all the hype of the new LTE compatibility, the retina display and all the great new apps, it almost makes your iPad2 seem like a paper weight. But like the iPhone 4S, does the New iPad also have battery issues?

Dr. Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies Corporation, has put the device through its paces, testing just about every aspect of its “resolutionary” new Retina display. One thing he found, “batteries do …

iPad3 Specifications and Pricing information released

Today, Apple held their iPad event to introduce the new device being released March 16th. The iPad3 has a bunch of great new features as well as being the first Apple device to support 4G LTE speeds! The A5X dual-core processor that we reported earlier this week has also been confirmed. The new iPad will also contain the dictation portion of Siri, although the rest of the Siri functionality is still limited to the iPhone4S.

For the photographers and videographers, I think you will be pleased to learn that the new iPad also totes a 5mp camera, meaning you can …

iOS Application Camera Roll and Contact List Access

In the past weeks, Apple has been taking heat, from various online sources, after it was revealed that the Path application available in the iTunes store was able to collect the contents of your entire address book. Since then, Path CEO, Dave Morin, has issued an official apology and stated that they have deleted any contact list information that they had from their servers.

But then, just a few days ago, it was revealed by The New York Times, that iOS app developers can also access the contents of your device's camera roll. At this point in time, there …
