Status of iOS5 Untethered Jailbreak
We are nearing the estimated release date of the iPhone5 and the new iOS5 firmware to go public. Because of this, we have been having a lot of questions regarding an untethered iOS5 jailbreak. Of course there have been tethered jailbreaks available for all iOS5 betas so far and this has caused some people to think that an untethered version will be available as soon as iOS5 is released.
The problem with that theory is that the only reason there have been tethered jailbreaks available for the betas is because it uses the limera1n exploit which is bootrom-level and Apple cannot patch it without releasing new hardware.
Many members of various iPhone hacking teams have been confirming that they are currently and actively working on an iOS5 untethered jailbreak. Of course they have to keep anything they've found so far secret so as not to tip off anyone at Apple about possible exploits that could be used for an untethered jailbreak.

That being said, we would like to remind everyone that it would be a waste of time for the hackers to already be developing a jailbreak tool since any exploits they've found so far(if any) could easily be found and patched by Apple by the time the firmware goes public. Most likely they are just looking for as many exploits as possible right now so that when the firmware is released they have a lot to start on.
It's always possible that an untethered iOS5 jailbreak could be available within the first week after it's release, but more likely it will take a few weeks to a few months before we see one.
