Working Tethered 4.2.10 Jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.8b7a [Tutorial]

*UPDATE* MuscleNerd has released 0.9.8b7a which truly fixes the tethered 4.2.10 jailbreak :)

Step 1: Restore to 4.2.10 and download the ipsw file below:

Download 4.2.10 for Verizon iPhone4
Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b7a for Windows
Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b7a for Mac

Step 2: Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b7a for Windows or Mac.

Step 3: Now start Redsn0w, browse for the iOS 4.2.10 firmware file that you downloaded in Step 1. NOTICE: If you use Internet Explorer, first of all, download a new browser becuase IE is terrible :P Secondly, IE will save an IPSW file as a ZIP file which will not be recognized by Redsn0w. If you use IE you must FIRST rename your firmware file and change the extension to .IPSW instead of .ZIP.

Step 4: Once Redsn0w is done recognizing the firmware file, click Next and there you’ll be taken to a new window. Simply check the “Install Cydia” box as shown below and leave other options as it is for now. Once done, click Next.

Step 5: On this screen, Redsn0w will instruct you to power down your device and plug it in to your computer. Follow the onscreen instructions and then click Next to continue.

Step 6: On this screen you will have to put your device in DFU mode. Just follow the instructions on the redsn0w program.

  • Hold down the home and power button at the same time for 10 seconds.
  • Release the power button but continue holding home for another 10 seconds.
  • If you did it correctly, Redsn0w will detect your phone in DFU mode and begin exploiting.

If you performed the above mentioned steps correctly, then your device should be in DFU mode.

Step 7: Redsn0w will now install cydia on your iPhone. Once it is done and reboots you will notice that your Cydia icon is blank and doesn't open. That is because this is a TETHERED jailbreak. Every time you reboot your phone you must follow the next step:

Step 8: If you left Redsn0w open just hit "back" otherwise reopen Redsn0w and on the options screen check the box that says "just boot tethered now" and nothing else and then click next. Again, put your device into DFU mode(you DO NOT have to turn your phone off to enter DFU mode. Just do the same sequence of holding home and power again, it will work at the apple logo). and allow Redsn0w to boot your iPhone up. Remember, you must do this every time you reboot.

That’s it! You should now have a jailbroken iPhone4 on 4.2.10!

I tried both 4.2.9 and 4.2.10 firmware and it does not work.
Does anyone get this working yet?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

The issue has been resolved. Please download 0.9.8b7a from the link above. You do not need to re-jailbreak just use it to boot tethered from now on :)

      • chris

hmm i dont know.. for me same problem happens when i tried to jailbreak with previous version.
after installing winterboard and respring with new theme it does not work.. i just want to change theme!! T-T

        • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

It works, just use 0.9.8b7a, I tested it last night.

          • JeffM

no it still doesnt work and i have the newest version of redsnow. as soon as i reboot the iphone after downloading sbsettings my phone gets stuck with the apple logo trying to boot. this is the same problem with earlier versions of redsnow for jailbreaking 4.2.10

          • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Trust me, it works. Myself and two other people personally beta tested it for MuscleNerd early this morning. I installed WinterBoard and rebooted no problem.

          • JeffM

ive done it 5 times already still having problems. should i reboot after jailbreaking without installing any apps.

          • JeffM

so i did the jailbreak again with cydia installed and used redsnow 0.9.8b7a. without any apps from cydia installed i rebooted my device. when the iphone booted up i try to open cydia and it immediately crashed. all i saw was a glimpse of it try to open and then it crashed.

          • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

            You have to boot tethered.

          • JeffM

yea i know… i have done that i know how to jailbreak an iphone. i can open cydia and access anything in the program that is offered. again when i turn off my phone and restart it after having played around with cydia and not installing any apps, cydia becomes inaccessible. it crashes while trying to load the window

          • Chris

            Thanks JaeM1llz!!
I knew it would work since you insisted!
I guess just remember to reboot using redsnow after you install apps in order to get those work.

I will be waiting for untethered version now.. if they decide to make one.. :P

          • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Great Chris, glad to hear you got it working. Yes, that is the FIRST thing everyone must understand about a tethered jailbreak. Tethered means that you MUST boot tethered with Redsn0w EVERY time you reboot the phone. Unfortunately there will never be an untethered jailbreak for 4.2.10, it is a very minor update that does not add anything so it would be a waste of an exploit, especially since iOS5 is right around the corner.

  • Liz J

JeffM- I had the same problem, AT FIRST. Jailbreak worked, reboot tethered worked, Cydia opened. Downloaded Winterboard and hit the reboot button on the screen. Phone got stuck on the apple logo, but I got it into DFU mode, the little pineapple came up, and ta-da! Winterboard icon was on my screen and I’m now downloading fun things. Hope you can get it to work!

  • ScottS

I have followed instructions to the letter (4.2.10/8b7/reboot) and I get stuck on the Apple after installing any app. JaeM1llz – you should avoid the “trust me” phrase.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Well I’m pretty confident seeing as how i already ran it on my own phone and it worked fine… You said you used 8b7, you need to use 8b7a, MuscleNerd released it very early this morning, the links are posted above

  • Emryse

So does this version of redsnow for real work? It worked before until you download something from cydia is that problem still there?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Yes, it works 100% just be sure to use the 0.9.8b7a version that is posted above.

  • Suzanne

    Thank you! It works!

Originally though, it still wouldn’t recognize the 4.2.10 ipsw file you download from above. So instead I just copied the 4.2.10 ipsw file in the iTunes Library and that works.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Glad you got it working Suzanne! The file you downloaded from GetiOS must have somehow corrupted during the download because the one I downloaded from there works fine. Thanks for reporting back!

  • Chad

Did it perfectly as posted above. Got the 4.2.10 device jailbroken and then booted as tethered. Went into Cydia and downloaded winterboard. I then rebooted the device and it got stuck on the apple screen. I’m now in the process of restoring it. I did everything and downloaded everything as told above. Is is a winterboard problem?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

No, winterboard works fine as well as all other packages. Make sure you are using 0.9.8b7a from the links above.

      • Chad

Okay, i will try again once more. I’ll post results.

        • Chad

Same exact thing happened again. I swear to God I’m doing it step by step as posted above. Downloaded 0.9.8b7a and 4.2.10 from GetiOS. I downloaded the Windows version.

          • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Well, I don’t know where you’re going wrong but I tested it on Mac and Windows and it works

    • Liz J

I also got stuck on the apple for a bit, just put it in DFU mode and it’ll start back up.

      Haven’t had any problems yet!
This works people, just be patient. You may have to fiddle around with it a bit, but it DOES work. it took me about 20 minutes to jailbreak it, reboot, etc. It’s not that hard…

  • DrMurderMachine

I think that i am having the same problem as a lot of the other posters but something is being lost in the explanation of the problem so I will try to step by step this and see if that makes things clearer.

Did the tethered jailbreak fine with the new package that is linked above.

Powered the phone down and used redsn0w just boot tethered right now option.

    Cydia worked fine.

After installing anything with Cydia that required a reboot the only option after the black Cydia install crawl is reboot device or something to that effect.

The phone at this point will only load to the apple symbol then gets stuck.

My question from this point is how can I boot tethered with redsn0w when I cant power my phone down as normal now that it gets stuck on the apple screen?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

You don’t need to power it down, just put it into pwned-DFU mode and boot tethered.

      • DrMurderMachine

That is the problem i cant get it into pwned-DFU mode or do the just boot tethered option because in redn0w both options ask for your phone to be plugged in and OFF. The plugged in is not problem but I am stuck on the apple logo screen and every time I hold the power button the screen will go dark for like 2 or 3 sec then just back to the apple logo. Is there a fix for this.

Also thank you for the prompt reply!!!

        • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Your phone doesn’t have to be off to go into DFU mode, just press and hold home and power at the same time for 10 seconds, then release power but continue holding home for another 10 seconds. Your screen will be black then just open redsn0w 0.9.8b7a and load the 4.2.10 firmware and select “just boot tethered”

          • DrMurderMachine

            BOOMTOWN!!!!

Your the real business man! That took care of it. It is a bother that this step will be needed with every or most cydia tweeks but that is the price I pay to get Barrel.

            Thanks again man!

          • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

No problem! One trick is to use the queue feature in Cydia, queue all the tweaks/packages you want to install that require reboot and then download and install them all simultaneously. After that just make sure to keep your phone charged and dont download any Cydia apps that require reboot when you are away from a computer. I had a tethered jailbreak in the early 4.0 days for about a month and never once had to reboot it when I was away from my computer :)

  • EchoChicago

I am new to jailbreaking, so I have a question that may seem basic. So I had the tethered jailbreak working last night, then this morning the phone was powered down. When I went to turn it on I just got the Apple logo. I believe the answer to fix that is to get to a computer and reboot in tethered mode, but my real question is: if that happens when I don’t have access a computer with redsn0w 0.9.8b7a, is there a way to just boot it to the regular Apple firmware (I guess it’s firmware)? Or would I be stuck somewhere without any phone at all until I can reboot using redsn0w or restoring using iTunes?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

No, there is no way to boot a tethered phone without using redsn0w, so make sure not to reboot your phone when you are not near a computer.

      • EchoChicago

Ok, so to be sure I get it, I obviously can’t boot to jailbreak mode, but I also can’t reboot to the standard non-jailbreak mode?

Also, if I had to restore using iTunes, do I lose my apps that I bought and installed? thx

        • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

No, once you’re jailbroken there’s no way to boot the phone as an unjailbroken phone. If you restore your phone you will lose everything just like you would if you were not jailbroken. You would have to resync all your apps.

          • EchoChicago

JaeM1llz I appreciate your information and patience. One last question… if I buy apps for jailbroken phone, then have to restore, have I lost those apps? I understand that the standard Apple Store apps should be fine, but if I rejailbreak, can I get those apps back again or would I have to buy again?

          • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Cydia purchases are tied to your Cydia account, all you need to do is log into your Cydia account and redownload the apps that you’ve purchased.

  • Isaac

this works. im no iphone genius or hacker but everything is pretty well explained. i found out after you jailbreak it and reboot jus tethered, u can download apps from cydia BUT after you download the app and click reboot phone, ur phone DOES get stuck on the apple logo and YOU CANNOT turn it off like it says to do in the reboot section. No worries! you can still enter dfu mode with the apple logo on the screen. hook ur phone up to ur computer. go through the steps up above and just press the buttons combinations like it says, WITH the apple logo on ur screen and like magic the pineapple appears and the unlock screen pops up. hope this helps.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Thanks Isaac, I’ll make it more clear in the instructions that you do not have to shut your phone off to enter DFU mode.

  • AmyF237

Wow! Thanks so much! I am new to the jailbreak world and don’t know a whole lot about computers. However, thanks to this site, I was able to jailbreak my Verizon iPhone4 4.2.10. Downloaded Winterboard and then boot tethered, works just fine! :)

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Great, thanks for reporting back Amy! Glad you got it all figured out!

  • AmyF237

BTW, after I download an app that requires reboot, instead of hitting the ”reboot now,” I just manually turned off my phone. The proceeded to open redsn0w and boot tethered. Has worked for every app so far! Thanks!

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

You don’t even need to turn off the phone, you can just go straight into DFU mode from the “Reboot Device” screen.

  • AmyF237

ok…i was able to download some apps from cydia. then springboard crashed and now i can’t seem to get it out of safe mode…even after booting tethered and putting it in DFU mode, i still cant get it out of safe mode???

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

If it keeps rebooting into safemode that means that you installed something that’s not compatible with 4.2.10. Go into Cydia and uninstall whatever the last app was that you installed and don’t install it again.

  • AmyF237

Ok I got it working now. Thanks again for your patience! and for responding to my posts. I’m sure it’s got to get a little frustrating for those of you that know all about this! So big thanks to you for taking the time to walk us newbies through this!!

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

We all start somewhere :) I remember when I first got my iPhone and started learning about jailbreaking, everyone I talked to was very rude and impatient and would always just tell me to “google it” when I had a question, which is one of the main reasons we started this website, to cater to newer jailbreak users looking for reliable and friendly information.

      • AmyF237

yes, I too ran into a few people that weren’t near as nice! So again. Thanks and props to you for being so patient and taking time to respond. I was able to JB Friday and I’ve been tweaking ever since. Quite time consuming, but totally worth it! and I would recommend this page to anyone. Thanks again!
        Amy : D

  • redsnow 4.3.5

Good job man for our updation

  • Gentle247

worked for me like a charm! Thanks!

  • Gentle247

please can u do ur testing again….i think i may have achieved an untethared jailbreak,,,,,my phone boots up normally when turned off and back on. And cydia works just fine.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

      That is not possible.

      • Dennis the Menace

Actually, he is right. The ONLY time I had to use Redsn0w to boot tether thus far was for Winterboard.
I have installed many addons including SBSettngs, only required a respring! If I power off, then yes, or if the battery dies, I will have to tether boot.

  • Solomon

Isnt the purpose of jaibreak to be able to get apps for free? If so then why does Cydia ask me for money?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Jailbreaking is a process used to gain root access to your device so that you have complete control over what you can install and do with it. Cydia is a 3rd party app store, it is just like the iTunes app store in that some apps are free and other cost money. Some people choose to use jailbreaking to pirate paid applications but that is illegal and we do not support or condone that kind of activity here.

    • Mike

Just add more sources to ur source list for cracked apps that r free

      • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

        Hi Mike,

We do not support piracy here at iPhoneBlogr. Cheers

  • Mike

This jailbreak worked great im running on it right now with a bunch of cydia apps like winterboard and many more seems to work fine so far

    • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

Great to hear, thanks for your feedback :)

  • George

I am having a problem with this. I install cydia fine and the tethered reboot goes fine. I download MyFi from cydia and it requests a reboot. I do a tethered reboot and it hangs at the pineapple, causing me to have to restore my phone to clear it. HELP!!!

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Then you aren’t using the right version of Redsn0w.

      • George

Thanks for your reply. I am using 0.9.8b7, which I believe is the current one. Please advise if I am mistaken. I am unsure as to what as ti what Mike is speaking of. If I try and bypass the reboot by pressing the home key and then try and run the app it automatically reboots the phone. Any helps greatly appreciated. Thanks again

    • Mike

Also when u download from cydia and it says reboot just hit tye home key and however u have it set up just respring it instead so u dont have to go three the reboot process thats what i do and i also put it in dfu mode when redsnow is on the screen that says to turn ur phone off cuz it will take it threw the steps automatically when dfu mode is aquired

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

You are mistaken, the current one is 0.9.8b7b. Do not try and bypass the reboot process by hitting home, that won’t accomplish anything. Once you install a package that modifies your system files you MUST reboot for the changes to take effect. The phone DOES NOT need to be turned off in order to enter DFU mode.

    • Mike

I bypass reboot and then go to sbsettings and just respring it works for me

      • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

That will only work for apps that do not modify system files. There are some Cydia packages that absolutely require a reboot in order to work, there is no way around this.

  • yonaten

It is my first time using redsn0w, i was wondering how long does it take to reboot when you first enter DFU mode?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

It takes about the same time as normal

      • yonaten

        it’s been about 20 mins

        • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Then something went wrong, it shouldn’t take anywhere near that long. 1 minute maybe 2 minutes max.

          • yonaten

i started the process again and i am assuming it freezes at the reboot part right after putting in in DFU mode.

  • shenaniganizer

Worked perfectly the first time. This was my first time jailbreaking and I had no issues what-so-ever! It’s really very easy with the simple instructions given.

  • Amerrrika

worked awesome for me thank you!!!

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

No problem, thanks for reporting back :)

  • nzinga

i’m a very new iphone4 owner (bought it a week ago) and I know very little about jailbreaking. I upgraded to 4.2.10 as soon as I got the phone not knowing any better. From what I have read, I don’t want to do a tethered jailbreak or to try to downgrade back to 4.8 for fear that I will muck up the process. What are my options? Will there be an easy way to jailbreak untethered in the future on my device? Will Apple make ios5 an upgrade available to my phone so that I can utilize jailbreakme3.0? Is that how it would work?

    Thanks

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Your options are to do a tethered jailbreak on 4.2.10 or wait for iOS5 to be released and jailbroken. JailbreakMe does not and will not support iOS5.

    • Dennis the Menace

Just wait for IOS 5.0….Redsn0w is VERY easy now, that it works! if you decide to use Redsn0w, you can do what I did. Go buy a small flash drive, download Redsn0w 0.9.8b7 and the IPSW 4.2.10 and put both files on the flash drive, keep it with you at all times. If your Iphone should need to be powered off, or your battery dies, you can swing by a public library and reboot if needed! Its not that bad! Tethered is NOT the worst thing.

  • iRoc

Hey does this jailbreak allow you to tether you 3g connections to other devices? Thats the main reason i would like to jailbreak. Thanks

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Jailbreaking itself does not enable tethering, you need to download a 3rd party application(TetherMe or MyWi) in order to tether.

      • iRoc

Ok so i downloaded and installed TetherMe, however im confused on what i need to do next, after the application is installed should I hit rebot device on my iphone or do i need to put it into dfu mode from that screen adn then reboot from redsnow??

        • iRoc

Nevermind the obvious answser was to reboot by putting it into DFU mode, thank you so much for all this information. Ive been jailbreaking iphones for a while so im no beginner but ever since i got my iphone 4 i never really wanted to jailbreak it until now. This is great information and if everyone actually carefully reads the steps before even jailbreakin and do them the right way you will have no problems. Only thing i would add in additional notice to the last step is telling people that when you download or queue up multiple apps in cydia then install them, tell them to reboot by using redsnow, not by hitting reboot device on the iphone.
          Thanks again

          • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

It doesn’t really matter what they hit on that screen, either way they are going to have to go into Pwned-DFU mode and reboot tethered again, that’s just part of having a tethered jailbreak.

  • iRoc

Is it possible to get installous 4 with this jailbreak? Each time i download it from cydia after adding the sources, it gets installed but theres no app on my springboard for me to open the app with… Anyone else having this problem?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

We do not support piracy here.

  • Dennis the Menace

Works! Running 4.2.10 (8E600) MC676LL, WORKS!!! The good news? The ONLY time I had to boot tethered is after adding Winterboard. ALL other packages only required the springboard to “respring”, no tether boot needed! Even after adding “Ultimate Nexus One” Winterboard wallpaper, all I had to do was respring! I even added SBSettings and NO TETHER BOOT needed, only a “respring”!!!
***NOW I will SAY that, after the jailbreak, it took 3 times to boot tethered, to get Cydia Icon to finally show.
The 1st 2 times I tether booted, it just showed Cydia and a blank icon.
MucleNerd THANKS A BILLION for fixing. I have been trying for weeks with RedSn0w….

  • Edrick

After Jailbreaking my Iphone is stuck on the apple logo. Any ideas?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

      You have to boot tethered

  • Deirdre

For the longest time I was worried about not being able to jailbreak my Verizon iPhone on 4.2.10. All the blogs sAid it didn’t work and that there was no hope for us. Then I saw this post and decided to give it another shot. I downloaded the most current redsnow and tried again. Worked like a charm first try!!! I already have winterboard, cool fonts, and themes downloaded :-) . Thank you for the good info. The therhered reboot isn’t a problem, I have only needed to do it once. I am frikin stoked!!!

  • Dougie

It said “reboot device,” so I clicked on put into pwnage-DFU. I did that, then went back and did “just boot tethered”. Now, its stuck on the pineapple. And it won’t come out.

I don’t think this tethered jailbreak is 100% working.

  • Dougie

yeah, fur sure the reboot device thing isn’t working. i’ve done DFU from the “Reboot Device” screen and tried to reboot but it does nothing.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Why did you go into pwned-DFU mode? That’s only for restoring a custom firmware. For a tethered jailbreak all you do is enter DFU mode and select “just boot tethered” and trust me it is 100% working. I have done it on my own phone and many other people from this website have done it and reported it is working.

  • Corbin

Worked great and was pretty easy, thanks so much!

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Glad we could help, enjoy :)

  • John

Have not yet tried, plann to this weekend. My question Is can you download flash player and other software without going through cydia

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

There is no such thing as flash player for iPhone, you can download an alternative browser called “Skyfire” that will allow you to transcode some flash videos.

  • Scott Wiseman

I found a seemingly small discrepancy for updating. After spending over 6 hours and almost bricking the phone twice, I realized the difference between firmware 4.2.1 and 4.2.10!!!!!!!
In mathematical terms, wouldnt 4.2.1 be the same? I finally got cydia installed after using this. Now, when i reboot untethered, do i still get to use most of the phone or none? And I want to use this in Costa Rica, i heard i had to get it jailbroken, ( thats why im doing this) does anyone know about using this now, (post-JBed)? Thanks.

Yes, in math it would be. But this isn’t math and “1″ is very different from “10″ :P On a tethered jailbreak you need to boot the phone tethered every time you reboot, if you don’t the phone will not even boot up at all.

Hi, I am reading this blog and trying to figure out, what are the advantages for jail breaking an iPhone. Please, pardon my ignorance for asking why do I need a jail broken iPhone. I am very new in this area, I need to justify doing it!! thank you

        • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Jailbreaking gives you complete control over your iPhone you can customize the phone however you want with themes and you can install tweaks and apps that Apple will never allow in the App Store.

Ive done to the instructions, after I browse and it recognizes the IPSW file I press “Next” and the status changes from “IPSW successfully identified” to “unexpected error during preperation” and wont let me continue. Please help.

I am jailbroken running 4.2.10 on Verizon. I understand IOS5 is out 10/12. Is there anything I need to do to upgrade to IOS5? Or can I jet tether and let the upgrade happen? I will jailbreak it again after IOS5 install. Is there anything I need to be aware of?

    Thanks much for your efforts!

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

You should wait until iOS5 is officially released

      • Statman

Yes I do plan on waiting, but that was not my question. What I want to know is…is it ok to update the OS with a jailbroken phone? Or do I need to restore it first? Thanks.

        RIP Steve!

Hey, I’ve had this jailbreak for a month or two now and its been great, but I would like to upgrade to iOS 5 now. However, each time I try to restore a previous backup or to a 4.2.10, or try to just update to iOS 5 i get an error message from iTunes. It doesn’t allow me to restore or update. The error code is 3194, and alol the troubleshoot questions have been followed so I’m not understanding why I can’t restore or upgrade. Is there a certain way I need to restore? Please help, its kind of annoying. I never had this error code until after I jailbroke.
    Thanks

Apple’s validation servers are swamped right now, you have to just keep trying until it goes through.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

Are you sure you used the boot tethered option after completing the jailbreak?

  • jeff

there are 3 options for model type when directed to the download area? I used cmda but my phone says the model is mc678LL?

also, I am bringing my iphone4 4.2.10 outside the US to give to a family member in Asia. Should I do nothing or jailbreak the phone tethered before giving it to her?

Sorry for such basic questions but I do not own a iphone and this is all new to me.

If it matters, the carrier was verizon 10.2

thanks very much for your kind attention.
