Tethered iOS 4.3.4 Jailbreak and iOS 4.2.9 Jailbreaking Using Redsn0w [Tutorial]

It has been possible to do a tethered jailbreak of iOS 4.3.4/4.2.9 since they were first released, but I was holding off on making a post on it since most people had 4.3.3/4.2.8 and had their SHSH saved. However, over the past few days I have helped several of our readers jailbreak 4.3.4/4.2.9 so it seems as though we now have people coming in to the jailbreaking scene who's devices came with 4.3.4 pre-installed so it seems like a good time to write up a tutorial.

You can use the latest beta version of Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 to do a tethered jailbreak on your device running iOS 4.3.4/4.2.9. Please not that having a tethered jailbreak means that you will have to connect your device to a computer and do the last step of this tutorial EVERY time you reboot your phone. Obviously, this is not a desirable method of jailbreaking so if you have your 4.3.3/4.2.8 SHSH and can downgrade, you should do that.

*UPDATE* With the recent release of iOS 4.3.5/4.2.10 you can also use this tutorial to jailbreak those firmwares. The process is the exact same. Once you are on your 4.3.5/4.2.10 firmware all you have to do is follow this exact tutorial(still point redsn0w to 4.3.4/4.2.9 even though you are on the newer firmware).

DOWNLOADS:
Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 - Win
Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 - Mac
iOS 4.3.4/4.2.9

Once you have downloaded the necessary files above, please follow this tutorial in order to run a tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.4 or 4.2.9.

Step 1: Open Redsn0w and browse for your 4.3.4/4.2.9 file and select it. Redsn0w will say "processing firmware" and eventually you will see the screen below indicating that your firmware has been successfully identified.

Step 2: Click "next" and you will be taken to the options screen. On this next screen you should put a checkmark in the box that says "Install Cydia." This is the only box you should put a checkmark in(it should be checked by default). Hit next again.

Step 3: On the next screen, Redsn0w will prepare you to put your device into DFU mode. If you know how to do this process already just go ahead and do it at this time. If you do not know how to do it just follow the onscreen instructions and it will walk you through it.

Step 4: At this point, you will notice a pineapple on your device's screen as Redsn0w is doing the jailbreak process. This process may take a bit of time but when it's done your phone will boot to the dashboard and you should now see that Cydia has been installed. However, you will notice that if you try and open Cydia it will immediately crash. This goes back to what I said in the beginning of this post, since this is a tethered jailbreak there is one final step that you have to perform in order for Cydia to function.

Step 5: Now it is time to boot tethered. Remember that from now on you will have to repeat this step EVERY time your phone reboots in order for Cydia to work properly. This is the downfall of a tethered jailbreak. Open up Redsn0w again and again select your 4.3.4/4.2.9 firmware file. However, this time on the options screen put a checkmark in the "Just boot tethered right now" box. You should only have  a checkmark in this box and nothing else. Once again follow the DFU mode instructions and this time when your phone reboots Cydia will work perfectly!

If you have any questions or you run into any issues during the jailbreak, please feel free to post a comment below and we will get back to you ASAP!

I have heard of this problem for a couple of IP4 users for 4.2.9. Every time I install a cydia app I reboot with redsnow again using the just tethered boot and every time it gets stuck on pineapple then apple, then just keeps boot-looping. Its killing me not having JB. I have followed the the directions to a T, even run as admin, and nothing!! I have factory reseted 9 xs already? any help?

There are no jailbreaks for 4.2.10, if you have 4.2.9 you have to boot tethered every time the phone reboots.

is there a better method of Jb underway?
