Jailbreak iOS 4.3.5/4.2.10 Using Redsn0w on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad and iPod Touch

*UPDATE 8/31/11* For those of you with 4.2.10, you can now do a Tethered jailbreak for 4.2.10 with Redsn0w 0.9.8b7a

Earlier today Apple released and update for 4, , iPad and users - /4.2.10. No concrete information about this update has been provided, other than it seems to fix an issue with certificate validation, as pointed out on Apple’s change log:

A security issue has been resolved with certificate verification.

The latest version of Redsn0w has been confirmed to the just released iOS 4.3.5/4.2.10 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod Touch 4G/3G. But it will be limited to tethered boot, which means you will have to reconnect your device to your computer every time you reboot your iOS device. iPad 2 is obviously not supported. This has also been confirmed by MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team:

@zaone @m1ckey29 ah ok thanks for checking! So those who really do want tethered 4.3.5 can use redsn0w pointed at 4.3.4 (except iPad2)

How to Jailbreak iOS 4.3.5/4.2.10 (Tethered)

Step 1: Download iOS 4.3.5/4.2.10(only if you aren't already on these firmwares) and iOS 4.3.4 (required by this version of Redsn0w) firmware file for your device.

Download iOS 4.3.5/4.2.10 for iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod touch and iPad
Download iOS 4.3.4/4.2.9 for iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod touch
Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b7b for Windows
Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b7b for Mac
Download iTunes 10.4 for Windows & Mac

Step 2: Download Redsn0w for Windows or Mac. Also make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes, which is version 10.4.

Step 3: Now start Redsn0w, browse for the iOS 4.3.4/4.2.9 firmware file (NOT the 4.3.5/4.2.10) that you downloaded in Step 1. Refer to the screenshots below:

Step 4: Once Redsn0w is done recognizing the firmware file, click Next and there you’ll be taken to a new window. Simply check the “Install Cydia” box as shown below and leave other options as it is for now. Once done, click Next.

Step 5: On this screen, Redsn0w will instruct you to power down your device and plug it in to your computer. Follow the onscreen instructions and then click Next to continue.

Step 6: On this screen you will have to put your device in DFU mode with a combination of the Power button and the Home button for a certain amount of time, simply follow the onscreen instructions on how to do so. The combination is usually like this:

  • Hold down Power button for 5 seconds.
  • Now without releasing the Power button, hold down the Home button simultaneously with the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Let go of the Power button but keep on holding the Home button for another 15 seconds.

If you performed the above mentioned steps correctly, then your device should be in DFU mode.

Step 7: Redsn0w will now jailbreak your device, don’t do anything weird at this point, just let Redsn0w finish. We would recommend that you don’t do anything with your PC or Mac at all during the process. Sitting idle and waiting for the process to end on its own is much advised.

Since this is a tethered jailbreak, whenever your iOS device reboots Cydia will crash immediately when you press it. You will have to repeat the “Just boot tethered right now” step EVERY time you reboot to prevent this. Go back to step 3 and on step 4 only check the box that says "just boot tethered now" and nothing else and then click next.

That’s it! You should now have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 4.3.5/4.2.10.

  3. Mysterion says:

Did this method work on Verizon iPhone 4 with 4.2.9 or 4.2.10 on it?

  4. Andy says:

Are these instructions basically rolling back the 4.2.10 iOS version to 4.2.9?

    • JaeM1llz says:

No, not at all, you are only using the 4.2.9 firmware file because Redsn0w is not compatible with 4.2.10. This does not downgrade your firmware it just jailbreaks and boots your device tethered using the 4.2.9 firmware file

  5. Rollss fa weekss says:

followedthis and it worked fine untill i had to reeboot for an app install…when ifollow the reboot steps it stays on the pinapple screen then i have to restore

  6. Andy says:

AWESOME! Worked great on iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.10. Just have to remember to go back and re-boot (tethered) after the initial jailbreak, in order to get Cydia to work.

    • JaeM1llz says:

Glad to hear it worked for you Andy! Lots of people have been reporting that they get stuck at the pineapple logo when booting tethered. Did you follow this tutorial exactly or did you do something different?

      • Jedan says:

Hey, so I know what you’re talking about with the cydia reboot problem. It just happened to me. Basically Cydia asks you to reboot your iDevice, and so If you choose the option cydia give you to reboot the iDevice, then you get stuck at the beginning loading screen. What i keep hearing everywhere is to just hold the sleep button and turn it off that way, then when you start it back up with redsnow it should work.

  7. dragonis says:

This dont Work for me any idea what I’m doing wrong I followed guide I got jailbroke installed winterboard phone asked me to reboot I rebooted tethered option with red snow then I get stuck on pineapple logo

  8. Dragonis says:

anyway around the pineapple after a cydia app install reboot
i reboot into tether with redsn0w then device boot loops on pineapple
    on verizon iphone 4 4.2.10

  9. Swag says:

well this doesn’t work for sure on an iPhone 4 from verizon.

it reboots once, and then once you try to install an application from cydia it won’t reboot even if you use redsn0w.

this is shit. because for people like me who don’t have blobs for 4.2.8 then we’re stuck on a regular iPhone 4 with no jailbreak for like 3 months when the iPhone 5 comes out at like the end of october.

    • JaeM1llz says:

That’s just the way things go in the jailbreak scene that’s why you always need to save your blobs and never upgrade unless you are sure that the firmware you are upgrading to is jailbreakable. Verizon iPhone users make up a very small percentage of total iPhone users, and of those Verizon users most of them have 4.2.8 blobs so the devs really aren’t concerned about focusing all their attention on such a minor update that doesn’t add any features or bugfixes.

    • tiago says:

tha sucks aint work for 4.2.10 .. when da hell is the untether jailbreak comin out ??.

  10. djsasser says:

For every article I find on redsnOw working on 4.2.10 I find just as many saying it doesn’t?? Is this a real issue or more user error? Cant seem to get a conclusive answer.
If the tethered jailbreak doesn’t work, how difficult is it to return to 4.2.10 and are there any issues after re installing? Thanks

    • JaeM1llz says:

At this point, it appears that it doesn’t work. A few users have reported that it worked, but it may be that they posted before trying to install anything in Cydia(which seems to be where the problems begin) and didn’t bother posting an update.

To get back to a factory 4.2.10 just hit restore in iTunes and no there will be no issues after restoring, it will be a fresh and fully-functional 4.2.10 restore.

Keep checking back because if I ever find a solution to getting the tethered jailbreak working I will update the tutorial. Thanks!

  11. Cody says:

I’ve gone through it a few times, i can say that it does not work. Cydia looks like the problem. For those that have managed to make it work I would love to hear how.

  12. Ashley says:

Every time I try to sync it it tells me to hook my phone up to itunes when press the home and sleep down, the releasing and holding home. I am with Verizon 4.2.10 any help?

  13. Chills says:

I think there is some major confusion in the process. I spent 12 hours yesterday fighting with SnowBreeze, TinyUmbrella, RedSnow RC14/16, iREBr4, and 2 computers trying to get 4.2.7 on my iPhone4 working. I finally gave up, and said screw it and let iTunes update it to 4.2.10 so I could actually use the damn phone. I got every error from 3194, 1600, 34, etc etc….While trying to jailbreak 4.2.7.

This morning in less that 10 min, its officially jailbroken with RedSnow0.9.8b4 and 4.2.9. Yes, it is tethered, but who cares, if for some reason you find yourself shutting your phone off, who doesnt own a PC these days, throw a 1gb thumb drive with RedSnow and 4.2.9 on it and leave it in your vehicle or backpack or whatever, in case you need to boot it up, and you’re not at your own PC.

The biggest part of the process that seems a little confusing to those who are doing this for the first time is the 2nd part.

RedSnow doesnt recognize 4.2.10, so you will get Unable to Recognize IPSW if you try using it, so even though your phone is on 4.2.10, you need to use the 4.2.9 to jailbreak it.

Follow the steps described, use 4.2.9, let it work its magic and package it up, then put it into DFU mode, and let it update the phone. After its done, it will boot back into normal mode, you will see the Apple, and your normal settings, you will then see the Cydia on your screen, normally it will be on the 2nd screen, but it will look funky grayed out.

In order to boot it to Cydia and being Jailbroken, this is where the tethered part comes in. Launch RedSnow again, pick your 4.2.9, let it recognize it, then follow the steps and put it into DFU mode, and just select Boot Tethered.

Then it will reboot, and you will see the Pineapple, give it a minute, and then your done, now Cydia is functional.

Im sure there are a bunch of people who are reading this and saying, DOH!! But you guys gotta understand that those who have never done this before, each step has to be spelled out for them and what they see along the process in order for them to complete it, otherwise, they think something went wrong, or it didnt work, etc etc…

Hope this helps some of you out….

    • JaeM1llz says:

Thank you for the lengthy and informational post Chills! Unfortunately at this time there is no method to get a jailbreak working on 4.2.10. Even tethered, we will be sure to post an update if this changes in the future.

    • Chills says:

So here’s the problem… If your iPhone is on 4.2.10, the RedSnow with a 4.2.9 will work, and will tether boot. The problem lies when you have to reboot the iPhone from a app on Cydia that requires a reboot, this is where it just hangs on the pineapple. No matter how many times I have tried to do a Tethered Boot after installing and rebooting from an app on Cydia, it will just hang at the pineapple, only option is to restore back to 4.2.10 from iTunes, then re-jailbreak, but you cant install ANY apps that will require a reboot.

The main reason I wanted the JB was for Myfi, had Cydia working, paid and downloaded Myfi which required a reboot, went to reboot in tethered mode, and get nothing but pineapple. So I guess im out $20 bucks till the IOS5, but I paid through Amazon, so I shouldnt have to re-purchase it.

RedSnow will work on 4.2.9 tether, but if it ever dies or reboots on you, consider yourself SOL, you will have to update to 4.2.10 through iTunes, then re-JB. Total pain in the ass unless someone can fix the reboot after JB’ing to 4.2.9. I have yet to find any successful answers.

      • JaeM1llz says:

Ya, it’s quite interesting that the tethered jailbreak works initially but then as soon as you install a Cydia package it won’t reboot. Hopefully MuscleNerd will update Redsn0w to support tethered jailbreak for 4.2.10 soon, thanks for all the information Chills and also thanks for helping our other readers!

  14. anne says:

Please help? I followed all the steps here to jailbreak my Verizon 4.2.10, and i successfully jailbroke it. But whenever i go to hackulo’s to install the installous, the app wont appear on my screen? so i decide to turn it off my phone and to turn it back on? but when i did that it won’t turn on it seems like it stuck or froze. Coz its been doing the samething over and over again so i been restoring my iphone for 4 times already. please help?

    • JaeM1llz says:

Installous is piracy and it is illegal, therefore we do not provide support for it here. Secondly, please re-read the top of this tutorial, you will see that this method does not work for 4.2.10 firmware.

  15. Brad says:

Everytime I download the iOS it does it as a zip file and redsnow won’t recognize it. It also takes like 2 to 3 hrs to download. Any suggestions? I’m also on the bs version 4.2.10

    • JaeM1llz says:

It’s not a zip file, your computer is just treating it as a zip file. It is an IPSW file. Also, Redsn0w does not support 4.2.10 that could be why it wasn’t recognizing it.

  16. Brad says:

Ok so I found a site saying you can use tiny umbrella to go back to 4.2.8 from 4.2.10 I can download the zip file from a redsnow link but how do you actually install on your phone and I still can’t figure out how to change from a zip file to ipsw

  17. Kameron says:

hey i jailbreaked my iphone 4 version 4.2.10 wid redsn0w nd uploaded 4.2.9 nd my cydia was white so i went back to redsnow nd selected just boot tethered right now nd my iphone 4 came back on nd den wen i went into cydia and downloaded winterboard, it asked me to reboot the device nd so i press da reboot nd after dat it froze on da apple nd never turnd back on. nd so after dat i have to restore my iphone 4. any solutions to jailbreak without restoring my iphone.

    • JaeM1llz says:

Hi Kameron, you must not have seen the update I added. It has been determined that there is no working jailbreak(tethered or untethered) for 4.2.10. There will most likely never be a 4.2.10 untethered jailbreak but hopefully MuscleNerd will update Redsn0w soon to at least support a tethered jailbreak for 4.2.10. Keep checking in for updates!

  18. Belles says:

Thank you all SO MUCH for your help in this thread. Particularly Chills and JaeM1llz… I totally upgraded to 4.2.10 by accident on Thursday night and screwed myself out of my jailbreak. I stayed up until 7:30 a.m. the following day trying to downgrade, and was unsucessful. I am so grateful I found this thread and was able to use sn0wbreeze to downgrade and then re-jailbreak. I can’t tell you guys how much I appreciate the help!

  21. Gio says:

Hey i have a verizon and upgraded to 4.2.10 without knowing it would leave me out the jailbreak mix where can i downgrade successfully and safely ???

    • JaeM1llz says:

You can only downgrade if you have your SHSH blobs saved for earlier firmware versions. If you do, just follow the downgrade tutorial at the top of the page.

  22. Liz says:

I’ve been searching tutorials, websites, etc. for hours; I’m sure this has been stated elsewhere, but I just want to double check… redsn0w WILL NOT WORK? (i.e., the jailbreak works, but once you try installing winterboard or another app that requires reboot, it will not reboot/work)? I’ve attempted to jailbreak my phone about 4 times tonight and each time I have had to restore through iTunes after trying to install winterboard/reboot. Does greenpoisen or any other jailbreak tool work? Verizon iPhone 4, running 4.2.10. THANKS GUYS!! 🙂

Hey guys i have a problem with my itouch 4g. My uncle just jailbroke it with redsnow tethered jail break for version 4.3.5. My itouch was on iOS 4.2.1 and then my uncle jailbroke it to 4.3.5. So my question is that is it possible for me to downgrade it back to 4.2.1? Because i cant put cracked apps for my device. Please help !

    • JaeM1llz says:

You can only downgrade back to 4.2.1 if you have the SHSH blob saved for it. Also, we do not support piracy here.

      • Enzo says:

Sorry about that. Uhm I had a backup before I jailbroke my itouch shall I use that to restore my itouch. What is an SHSH blob? Sorry kinda new to these stuff. Thanks for your help. Hope you reply again. Really need to turn it back to 4.2.1

Help please! is this bc 4.2.10 is not stable?(ready)

  32. Major says:

I did the redsnow tethered jailbreak without realizing that a reboot would cause me to need to do a complete restore. Unfortunately I followed a youtube guide that wasn’t updated before reading this article.

Now when I attempt to restore back to 4.2.10 I get error 1013 or 1014 right before the restore completes and I am left with nothing but a paper weight. Any ideas? At this point I’ll take my regular phone back and never attempt to jailbreak again.

    • JaeM1llz says:

Have you tried kicking the device out of recovery mode with TinyUmbrella?

      • Major says:

I called up a friend to try it on another computer. The restore went through without errors. Same version of itunes, same OS, same everything pretty much. Makes no sense to me why it would work on one computer and not the other.

Thanks for the advice anyways JaeM1llz. Knowing that somebody knowledgable would respond to my post (based on how dilligently you have responded to all the other comments) was the only thing keeping me from sheer panic after my phone failed to restore 5 times in a row. So Thank you for that. ^_^

  33. jerseyboy2 says:

it worked for my iPhone on Verizon but i couldnt get the installous app. i tried to download Winterboard, it asked to reboot device and after that it just froze and i had to do a hard reset. this is bullshit i just got my iphone yesterday with 4.2.10 and now i find out there is no legit untethered jailbreak for it and the tethered one with red snow is crap.

  34. JaeM1llz says:

For those with 4.2.10, the new version of Redsn0w that was released today will work to do a tethered 4.2.10 jailbreak.

  35. Nick says:

I did the 4.2.10 jailbreak on my VZ iPhone and I’ve been stuck at pineapple for like 3 hours. This happened after I tried to install from Cydia

I have an inoperable phone now. Every time I try to restore using iTunes the dl fails at the last possible second.

  36. ScottS says:

I was not aware there was a JB for 4.2.9 and I have my SHSHBlob saved. Which version of Redsn0w do I use to JB 4.2.9?

  37. JaeM1llz says:

Please don’t write in all caps like that, it makes it very hard to read. You can jailbreak using JailbreakMe but 04.10.01 is not unlockable with software so you will need a Gevey Ultra SIM to unlock.

  38. Me says:

So I’ve been browsing through the comments on here and just to get this right, there is no Untethered JB for Verizons 4.2.10. It doesn’t exist? If not, maybe in the works? Or maybe a way to downgrade IPhone to an older version? I’m just starting to figure out iTunes and the iPhone, and have never JB’ed one before. So should I just wait for next update, whenever that may be..

    • JaeM1llz says:

No, there are no untethered jailbreaks for 4.2.10 and there never will be. You can downgrade if you have your SHSH blobs saved for older firmware but since you’ve never been jailbroken before it’s safe to say that you don’t have them and it’s too late to save them now so tethered is your only option for now.

  39. Big Nate says:

Just worked for me, 9/3/11. Ran the installer, then let it run. When it finished Cydia had a white icon, so I re booted with the installer with the boot tethered now. iPhone 4, White, Was running 4.2.10. time to complete 10 minutes

  40. George says:

I am having a problem with this. I install cydia fine and the tethered reboot goes fine. I download MyFi from cydia and it requests a reboot. I do a tethered reboot and it hangs at the pineapple, causing me to have to restore my phone to clear it. HELP!!!

got it to work for me.new iphone version 4.2.10(8e600) follwed the dirctions at the top of the thread.i dont know crap about how to do this but it was easy and im not to computer literate.i tried the green poison one first and it locked the phone. i think, had to restore it then tried again, same thing, called a place off craigslist and they said it couldnt be done, then came across this thread and tried it and so far so good!!! ive downloaded alot from cydia and downloaded winterboard.took me a few to figureout how to get thing to work but now on right track i hope.lol.cant remember if i had to reboot or just the respring but everything ive downloaded so far is working great.hope this helps.only thing wish it would have told me is that after the second step it takes quite awhile before the phone came back on,sorta freaked out for a few mins thinking i really screwed things up.
thanks for the great instructions on how to do this jailbreak!!!!!!!

  46. KG says:

My Verizon IPhone 4 is on version 4.2.10 already.

So I should be using firmware iOS 4.3.4/4.2.9 with Redsn0w 0.9.8b7b.?
Is the reboot lock up issue been fixed?
If I have to reboot in the field, will I just have an unjailbroken phone untill the next tethered reboot?

    • JaeM1llz says:

No, you can just use the 4.2.10 firmware with 0.9.8b7b. And yes the reboot issue is fixed. And no, if you reboot in the field you will not even be able to boot the phone, it will freeze on the apple logo. You MUST boot tethered from a computer any time you reboot in order to use your phone.

  47. cassandra says:

the icon for cydia doesnt look the way its supposed to and wont let me open it , why ?

  48. Vlad says:

If you do it right it works! cydia works! everything work! only one thing everytime you restart your iphone, you have to run redsnow agian and put in DFU mode and select “just Boot Tethered right now” instead of “install Cydia”. but its pain in a** to do it all the time you restart your iphone!

  49. Brent Rightnour says:

Works perfectly. Thanks a lot for the awesome guide.

i followed all of the steps, but my iPhone is not rebooting. I have an iPhone 4 for verizon and it operates on 4.2.10… redsnow just says waiting for reboot, and my iPhone screen is black, but it’s turned on. Any suggestions?

  53. d0ntp4n1c says:

Any time you need to reboot after installing app from Cydia follow this and it worked for me

After package install do not hit the reboot device button. Instead hit the home button to return to springboard.
Hold down power to turn off phone
Boot through redsnows boot tethered option

I did this after installing SBsettings and it worked fine. Fresh install<jailbreak<boot tethered<ran cydia<installed sbsettings useing above method. Havent installed anything else yet using this method but SBsettings worked without issue

    • JaeM1llz says:

The package you install won’t take effect until you reboot the device. It’s best to just not install anything that requires reboot until you’re around a computer.

  54. The Coach says:

This jailbreak worked great for me. Problem I am having is now I want to restore so I can upgrade to ISO5 and jailbreak again, but I cannot restore. I error out if I try to restore saying my device is not running correct software, or I get that one error code that says the same thing. If I try to just upgrade to ISO5 it starts to do a backup but locks up about 5% of the way through. I have tried restoring with and without doing backup, same thing. Have not seen how to upgrade without backup. I also tried downloading 4.2.10, holding the shift button while clicking on Restore and same thing. Any advice?
