VLC Player Application finally pulled from the iTunes App Store
The ever popular VLC Player application from the iTunes App Store, which allows users to playback video that is not natively supported by the iPhone, has finally been pulled from the iTunes App Store. Apple had received a formal letter from the developers of VLC(the computer version) about copyright infringements.
The infringement is actually more of just a snag in the way that iTunes operates. iTunes does not allow the installation of an application(free or paid) by a user on more than 5 devices. This goes against the original GNU license VLC's code is based on. According to the developers of VLC, this should come as no surprise as it was only a matter of time before the application was pulled.
At last, Apple has removed VLC media player from its application store. Thus the incompatibility between the GNU General Public License and the AppStore terms of use is resolved - the hard way. I am not going to pity the owners of iDevices, and not even the MobileVLC developers who doubtless wasted a lot of their time. This end should not have come to a surprise to anyone.
This is not the end of the world however, soon after the application was pulled from the iTunes App Store, Ryan Petrich had already added the application to his Cydia repository. If you want to use VLC Player now simply go into Cydia and add the source http://rpetri.ch/repo and you will see the package "VLC media player"
Otherwise, for those who are not fans of VLC Media Player, or for our readers who do not have a jailbroken device. We would also like to suggest another application that does the same thing that is still available in the iTunes app store. Come check out our cinexplayer review!
