Skyfire application temporarily “sold out”

Earlier this evening, we announced that the new application, Skyfire, which has been going through the application approval process for the past 2 months, was released today. Skyfire is a browser replacement that allows playback of Flash videos on your iDevices using HTML5 transcoding. The developers knew that this was going to be a successful application since up until now there is only one alternative to run Flash(Frash) and it is compatible with hardly any flash files making Skyfire the only viable option to watch Flash videos on your device.

Apparently they did not plan well enough. Within 5 hours of Skyfire going live on the AppStore it not only became the , but also the #1 application overall in the "utilities" category, which is amazing considering how many other utilities were released years ago compared to Skyfire which was only available for 5 hours. This is not the end of Skyfire, those who have already purchased it(including myself) will still be able to use it but at terribly slow speeds. Currently it takes about 2 minutes to transcode a video(in my experience). Skyfire is working on expanding their bandwidth so that they can handle all the transcoding that has to be done. Below is an official statement from their blog:

Skyfire for iPhone has been received with unbelievable enthusiasm. Despite our best attempts and predictions, the demand far exceeds our initial projections.

The user experience was performing well for the first few hours, but as the surge continued, the peak load on our servers and bandwidth caused the video experience to degrade.

Thus we are effectively ’ and will temporarily not accept new purchases from the App .  We are working really hard to increase capacity and will be accepting new purchases from the App Store as soon as we can support it.

We are very grateful for the demand. Within 5 hours, Skyfire for iPhone became the top grossing app, the third highest paid app overall and the top application in the Utilities category. Wow!

Please bear with us as we bring our capacity in line with the incredible demand – stay tuned.

Thanks, Robert.

First of all, we do not condone piracy here, secondly it would be pointless to install it illegally anyway because the servers are so bogged down right now that it doesn’t even work properly. I purchased it yesterday before it was taken down and even today it takes around 2 minutes to transcode a 10 second flash video. There’s no point in using this app until they can expand their bandwidth
