Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 Tutorial – Pwned DFU Mode for Windows Users

Alright, so now that redsn0w is out, those of you with Windows computers can now use our pre-jailbroken firmware files to shift+restore and maintain your baseband while upgrading to 4.1 You must use the new redsn0w version that was released last night to enter pwned DFU mode and then you will be able to shift+restore using one of our custom firmware files.

Things you will need:

- Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 for Windows
- A factory 4.1 firmware file from here(doesn't matter for which device you are only using it to bypass the first screen of Redsn0w, I have asked MuscleNerd why this is necessary and the DFU option isn't just offered on the first screen but haven't received a response yet).
- A pre-jailbroken firmware file for your specific device
- And of course, iTunes

Tutorial:

Step 1: First you need to open Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 in Windows. The first screen will have you browse for your firmware file. You should navigate to the FACTORY firmware file that you downloaded. I don't know why but they didn't include the option to enter Pwned DFU mode on the first screen of Redsn0w so you have to select a factory firmware file to bypass this part of the process.

Step 2: After you have selected the factory firmware file that you downloaded, if you have an iPhone 3Gs it will ask you whether you have the old or new(patched) model. If you have the new(MC) model then select "YES" this is VERY important, if you have the new model and you select no you will have to restore with a factory 4.1 firmware file which will take away the possibility to jailbreak. (To identify if you have MC or Non MC model, go to Settings - General - About and scroll down to Model. If it's MCXXXX then you have new (MC) model. If it's something like MBXXXX, then you have old (non MC) model.)

Step 3: Now click "next" and you will see Redsn0w apply kernel patches to the IPSW you selected.

Step 4: On the next screen is where you're gonna have a few different options. You may see more options than what are shown below, the important thing is that you want to select ONLY the option which is "Just enter pwned DFU mode right now" This option is basically doing what the DFU button in Pwnage Tool for Mac users does.

Step 5: This is another CRUCIAL step, I cannot stress enough that you should ALWAYS read instructions carefully and make sure you are doing things right. Please power off your device while the device is plugged into the computer. DO NOT click "next" until your device is both powered off AND plugged into the computer.

Step 6: This is a step we should all be quite familiar with, now we have to put the device into DFU mode. Just follow the on-screen instructions exactly how they are displayed and you will be fine.

Step 7: If for whatever reason things get screwed up and you didn't follow the instructions correctly you will see a screen like the one below. If that is the case please start over and read carefully, if you do not see a screen like the one below please continue to the next step!

Step 8: Alright, we are nearly there! Congratulations on making it this far! We are but mere minutes away from having a jailbroken 4.1 device with the old(unlockable) baseband! After Redsn0w detects your device in DFU mode it will begin processing again and you will see it applying the Limera1n exploit to your device.

Step 9: Alright, you are all set to restore your custom firmware! After you have applied the Limera1n exploit, you should see the screen below informing you that you should now be able to shift+restore in iTunes to restore with a custom firmware file. Click "Finish"

How to restore the custom firmware file

Now that you have used the Pwned DFU mode in Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 you can go into iTunes to restore the pre-jailbroken firmware.
-Open iTunes(it will say it has detected a device in recovery mode, click OK).
-Now hold the shift key on your keyboard and click the "restore" button in iTunes
-Navigate once again to the pre-jailbroken firmware you downloaded at the beginning of this tutorial
-After you select the firmware file iTunes will begin the restore process which will be identical to restoring with a factory firmware file.

After iTunes is complete you will now have a jailbroken device on 4.1 without an upgraded baseband!

Please let us know if you have any issues. Thanks!

This worked flawlessly. With the 4.1 pre-jailbroken ipsw, for iPhone 3Gs. I was on a recovery loop, and it did work.

Just remember to double check, after you finish step 9 with redsn0w, that you Apple Mobile Device service on Windows is started. I don’t know why, but mine was not started and I had to restart the whole process.

Also, I had to restart my device a couple of times, to be able to go into Cydia for ultrasn0w unlock.

Everything is good now. Jailbroken & Unlocked on iOS 4.1 w/ 05.13.04 BB

    Thanks!

      Hi,

I have an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.2.1 (baseband upgraded to 06.15.00) jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.6b6 using a WIN7 computer in XP mode.

My phone ran out batteries overnight and after recharging, I am now stuck in the receovery loop. I understand that I need to get the phone into pwned DFU mode (it’s already there, used iREB) but I don’t have a custom ipsw to do the shift-restore – can someone please help me get one? (I don’t have my SHSH blobs…I hope I haven;t bricked my phone!!!)

      Thanks.

  • Rob-L

This won’t work if I’m already on iOS 4.1 with the 05.14.02 baseband already, will it? Or does it actually downgrade my BB from 05.14.02 to 05.13.04?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

Unfortunately once you have updated your baseband there is no way to downgrade. You can use this method or another, Greenpois0n for example to jailbreak but you will not be able to unlock your iPhone yet.

An unlock will be available for 05.14.02 within a few days of iOS 4.2 being released.

      Hope that helps

      • Rob-L

Right on, thanks. That’s what I thought. I just read that iOS went gold today, so maybe we’ll have that unlock soon!

        • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

Your right, the GM version was released today. Hopefully iOS 4.2 won’t be too far away :)

”Please select the corresponding IPSW of your CURRENT firmware”

I’m running v3.1.3 on a new bootrom iphone3gs so i’ve to download ipsw 3.1.3 to begin step 1? Please suggest reliable sites where i can download official ipsw.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

Are you wanting to jailbreak your device on iOS 3.1.3 or are you looking to jailbreak on iOS 4.1?

We recommend downloading firmware files from here. Just select the type of device you have and the firmware version you would like to download.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Ya, I think he meant to say he downloaded the pre-jailbroken 3Gs firmware file. You can download the factory firmware file from here bhupatib. Make sure you only use the factory firmware file to bypass the first step in Redsn0w, DO NOT restore the factory firmware file or you will upgrade your baseband. Be sure to shift+restore and navigate the pre-jailbroken firmware file you downloaded from our site when you get to that step.

When you say “factory” firmware, do you mean the 4.1 downloaded from iTunes? I know not to restore with this, but is this the file I direct it to on the first screen?
Then when I’m ready to shift+restore, I direct it to the custom ipsw?
Any reason why I can’t use the same custom ipsw for both?

    Thanks a lot.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Yes, factory firmware is the firmware downloaded from iTunes, the official Apple firmware. You cannot use a custom firmware file in redsn0w because it will give you an error and you won’t be able to continue to the next step.

  • TeCHnO4EveR

It worked just fine for me on iphone 3gs activated version!!

  • MuchSmarter

Took me three tries but finally worked. Itunes first gave error 14, then error 9, then…third time finally completed.
    From jailbroken 3G 3.1.2 (BB 05.11.07)
to jailbroken 4.1! Thanks guys! Great custom firmware!

Glad it eventually worked out for you!

  • Bryan

Hello, I used this method and it actually worked really well for me. got to preserve my BB and unlock again after i updated to 4.1 on my 3Gs.

now cydia keeps giving me source errors (my fault nothing wrong with jailbreak or unlock) and i wanted to know if i could RE-Restore my iPhone and just start with a fresh install and still keep my preserved 5.13.04 Baseband using this method over again.

    any replies much appreciated.
    Thanks! :)

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Yep, just make sure you dont restore with a factory 4.1 firmware and you will be fine. You can restore with a custom firmware as many times as you want and your baseband will not be updated as long as you don’t use a factory 4.1 firmware.

      Thanks!

  • truculent

manage to install the firmware succesfully but cant find the carrier, it says no service. any idea why? tried resetting the network but still the same.

    • dand

      Reinstall Redsn0w. Worked for me.

    • Daniel

Same thing happened to me when I used the “activated” pre-jailbroken firmware, but after using the “unactivated” firmware, it worked for me.

  • John

I just followed exactly this tutorial. Setup ran smoothly but at the end it updated my baseband to 05.14.02
I must confess I used the custom firmware from iclarified com because RedSnOw 096b2 will not read activated 4.1 I downloaded from this blog and at another forum. The only thing it worked with is the non-activated 4.1 from iclarified. Now i’m left with a locked phone. Suggestions??

    Thnx

    • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

      Hi John,

Yes, using non-activated firmware files/a firmware that has not been altered using the Pwnage Tool or Sn0wbreeze will always update your baseband.

At the moment you will not be able to unlock. You will have to wait until iOS 4.2 is released. A few days later an unlock will be available. Be sure to sign up to our email updates to find out as soon as the unlock is released! :)

      Thanks

      • John

can I downgrade back to 4.26.08 then try again?

        • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Unfortunately not, if you have the iPhone 3G with the old bootloader you can downgrade but that’s the only situation. iClarified does not provide pre-jailbroken firmware, what you downloaded from their website was a factory 4.1 firmware file which is why your baseband got updated. If you would have read the tutorial carefully you would have seen that a 4.1 factory firmware file was only needed to bypass the first step, after you put the device into pwned-DFU mode that was when you were supposed to use our firmware file.

As Scragster said, you will have to wait for the new unlock unless you have a 3G with the old bootloader in which case you can downgrade with fuzzyband

          • John

thnx for the replies guys, I hope this one gets far out so ppl can see and learn from a rookie’s mistake!

    • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

      Hi Varun,

It depends if you have a new or old bootrom. If it is old it will be untethered, if it is new it will be a tethered jailbreak.

      Thanks

    Hi
Does anyone on here know how to unlock samsung t749. I tried google and found gsm-forum. They don’t response to newcomers and the file on there (NsPro) suppose to unlock all the phones listed. It is infected with trojans and there’s no instructions about it. Just don’t even go there. It’s notorious. Thnx

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

No. This is an iDevice forum not a Samsung forum.

    • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

      Hi John,

We cover information regarding iPhones and other iDevices, so this does not include the Samsung phone you are talking about.

When I say this, a lot of the people that view our site might have some information regarding the phone you are talking about. Feel free to hang out in our chat/suport feature down the bottom of the page.

  • Eduardo

On Step #2 MC and MB Models refer to Ipod TOuch isn’t it? for iPhone 3GS you should decide select yes if you have NEW bootrom or “NO” if you have OLD Bootrom.

    am I Correct?

  • John

so the unlock is out but we have to upgrade our bb to 06.15 for those who are using 05.14, 05.15

  • John

so my 3gs is now “bricked” Before I get into the prob…I have successfully JB with limera1n and unlocked it with redsn0w released today with new bb 06.15.00 Now it stuck at the apple logo, so i put it to recovery mode. Then i used redsn0w 096b5 (latest) to put it in DFU mode. Problem is iTune cannot restore the 4.1 custom firmware that I have. Is there a fix to this?

I don’t know if this is redsn0w problemt, but this happens after i install-then-remove the faceit app from iphoneislam

    • John

alright all said and done, and all trials and errors. I have finally fully revived my 3GS. ios 4.1 with bb 06.15 from new bootrom using the lastest redsn0w 0.9.6b5 If anyone has question shoot me a response or email me. I am glad to help because I know the feeling of being left and lost!

      • Jonathan

Did the ultrasn0w unlock work for you?

        • John

it works wonder as far as unlock carrier. dev team is working on a fix for GPS signal loss. this unlock inhibits tomtom, navigon and drain the batt a little quicker. be warned

      • Mustansir

Well i tried the process above with redsnow 0.9.6b5 and tried to restore the customer firmware but it gives me a 3194 error.

Before that I had 4.1 and upgraded to 4.2.1 with bb 06.15. everything went fine and the phone jailbroke. I had problems with installing cydia repository and after i installed the older ultrasnow and tried to boot my device, that was it. after that i haven’t seen my home screen and my phone is in a constant recovery mode. Unable to get out of it at all.

Have i bricked my phone and should place it in garbage already.

        Regards

        • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

What has most likely happened is you have updated to iOS 4.2.1 and the firmware is giving you the error 3194 (a baseband inconstancy error, because you have 06.15 installed). First of all, download TinyUmbrella and try kicking your device out of recovery mode. Do you know how to do this?

Do you have shsh files for iOS 4.1? If TinyUmbrella doesnt work, downgrade to iOS 4.1 using the shsh files.

In the restore, iTunes will most likely give you a 1014 error, just tick the iPhone out of restore mode using TinyUmbrella. Follow this tutorial here:

I think I might be screwed. I bought an iPhone 4 from eBay and it appears to be activated (it isn’t stuck on an emergency screen, I can get to the home screen). I want to carrier unlock it so I can give it to a friend to use in Thailand.

The phone arrived and had iOS 4.02 on it. I read instructions to jailbreak and unlock which said to use greenpois0n for iOS 4.1/4.02. The instructions included an IPSW iPhone3,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw for changing 4.02 to 4.1 and since I’m new to all this, I thought for some reason the directions applied only after it was in 4.1 and that there was basically no difference between 4.02 and 4.1 so I did Shift Restore and selected the IPSW and now the iOS is listed as 4.1 – I can check the bb after work if needed.

And not sure if this is important or not, but the phone always says “No Service”.

But here’s my problem. Even though the phone appears activated, I cannot get it into DFU mode to perform any jailbreak or carrier unlock. I’ve studied all the tutorials, tried all the command line alternatives, nothing puts it in DFU mode. Following the instructions will put it in Recovery mode, but the IPhone is never blank screen so never really in DFU mode. And both greenpois0n and limera1n say “Try Again”. Normally at that point I have to hold Sleep and Home until I get an Apple icon and the phone goes back to Home screen.

Please help, I’ve looked everywhere. JailBreakMe which works directly in Safari won’t work beyond 4.01. This phone is useless to me unless it can work in Thailand. Is it possible that the phone can be activated but not have the original SIM, would that prevent it from DFU mode? If so, is there a way around it? The site re: phonebook SIM says they don’t work anymore as of mid-November. Besides, I think the phone IS activated already. Do I need to fly to Massachusetts and put the original SIM in long enough to jailbreak and unlock it? Will AT&T tell me if this is the original SIM if the eBay seller is not talking to me? Or will AT&T force me to sign a contract or just kick me out of the store? :-(

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

If you cant get your device into DFU mode it’s a hardware issue. That being said, you will not be able to unlock your phone yet. The firmware file you downloaded was a factory firmware update and when you updated to 4.1 you also updated your baseband to an unlockable baseband. You can try downloading a prejailbroken firmware and restoring it using Pwned-DFU mode for the jailbreak but you will not be able to unlock it.

    • John

check your baseband if it’s anything like 2.xx.xx it can’t be unlocked. Just gotta wait. Next time be careful with the firmware update. Jailbreak and Unlock are easy to mess around. Update firmware is a one way street, if not done correctly! visit dev team blog if u want to learn more.

    • JaeM1llz

This procedure now only works if you have your 4.1 SHSH blob saved since Apple stopped signing 4.1 If you have your SHSH saved just open Tiny Umbrella and click “Start TinyTSS Server” then open iTunes and shift restore with the pre-jailbroken firmware.

If you don’t have your SHSH for 4.1 saved this method will not work for you. You will either have to use the tethered 4.2.1 jailbreak or if you have a Mac you can use the Redsn0w 0.9.7b4 tutorial for an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak

Hey I have a iPhone 3g with 4.2.1 firmware. I want to jailbreak it but I can’t put it in DFU mode because my power button is broken and the only way to fix it, is replacing the whole inside. How can I jailbreak it without me actually going through DFU mode is there a download that can do it for me?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

It’s not possible. All 4.2.1 jailbreaks require your device to be in DFU mode. Take it into Apple and tell them that the power button doesn’t work and maybe they can fix it for you.

    - Used pre-jailbroken firmware file ACTIVATED VERSION

If you have an unofficial carrier you MUST use the activated version or else you will be stuck at the emergency call screen. You must install ultrasn0w 1.2.3 in order to use cellular networks from unsupported carriers.

Thanks. Which carriers are regarded as official, only AT&T and Verizon? I use Telus in Canada and it’s one of the three largest telecom companies. Are they regarded as official carrier?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Correct, only AT&T and Verizon are official carriers so you would need to download Ultrasn0w 1.2.3 from Cydia in order to use Telus

    Viola!

Again, it worked like a charm and I’m able to use my phone! Simply amazing!!!!

In all honesty, I referred to more than ten sites, methods and tricks and yours was the only one that worked!

Thank you very much and I will visit your site regularly.

I dont see a difference in my iphone. Up on the top left corner it still says no service and it wont let me make pictures into my home screen wallpaper. Do you think if i tried to re-jailbreak it with greenpois0n that it will work???
