Pwnage Tool 4.1 Tutorial – Custom 4.1 firmware

This is a tutorial on your device using the version of the Pwange Tool. The Pwange Tool creates files, similar to Sn0wbreeze, which is also able to preserve your baseband when updating to iOS firmware. After updating you are then able to unlock your iPhone using Ultrasn0w.

Compatability:

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPod Touch 4G
  • iPod Touch 3G
  • iPad (on iOS 3.2.2)
  • Apple TV 2G

How To:

Step 1. Download the following files:

Download PwnageTool 4.1.2 for MAC
Download iTunes 10.0.1
Download the firmware files for your device. Please ensure you download the file.

Step 2. Install the latest version of iTunes which we have just downloaded

Step 3. Sync your device with iTunes to ensure that you have saved all contact information, applications etc. (Once you have restored your device you will have lost all of this information if it has not been synced with your computer)

Step 4. Open the and click on the device you would like to jailbreak:

Step 5. The Pwange Tool will now automatically scan your computer to find the firmware files that are compatible with your device. Click on the file you would like to cook, as shown below:

Step 6. The Pwnage Tool will now ask you if you would like to continue, please click 'Yes':

Step 7. Click on "No" when PwnageTool asks you “Do you have an iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 contract that would activate normally through iTunes?” (Note: This is importent, if you are not with AT&T PLEASE select NO)

Step 8. The Pwnage Tool will now go through the process of creating a custom firmware file that is able to preserve your baseband (iPhone) while jailbreaking your device at the same time:

Step 9. The Pwange Tool may ask you to enter your password, if it does, please do so. (This will need to be an account with administrative privileges)

Step 10. Great, the custom firmware has now been made.

Step 11. We not need to put your device into DFU mode, please follow the video below:

Note: Apple TV 2G users.

  • Connect your Apple TV with your Computer via microUSB.
  • Now reboot your Apple TV by holding down Menu + Down buttons together for around 6 seconds.
  • After reboot, immediately hold Menu + Play until you see the message in iTunes saying that Apple TV in recovery mode is detected.

Step 12. You now need to restore your device to the custom firmware you have just created. Open iTunes and select your device on the left hand side. Hold down the Shift button (or options button) and click on 'Restore' (NOT 'Update')

iTunes will now prompt you to select the firmware file you would like to restore to, search and located the custom firmware we have just created. Click Open.

Step 13. Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and don’t do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 4.1 on your iPhone, iPad (iOS 3.2.2) or iPod touch. Your iOS device screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. After the installation is done, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will restart automatically and you should now have a fully jailbroken iPhone, iPad (on iOS 3.2.2) or iPod touch running on iOS 4.1.

Step 14. If you require a carrier unlock, please follow this short tutorial here on how to unlock using Ultrasn0w.

There you have it! Your device will now be jailbroken at iOS 4.1! Congratulations.

Step 7 — “if you are not with AT&T PLEASE select NO”

What is the correct answer if my carrier IS AT&T??

      The only other option…. “Yes”

  • Andrew

    I’m stuck =[

Followed this video down to the line but I can’t get the Pwnage tool to see my aTV. It just keeps saying “Connect USB”. My aTV did install iOS 4.2 though, I hope that’s not had anything to do with it. Can I downgrade it?

I don’t know why and really want this to work :-(
    HELP!

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Try using a different USB cable or a different USB port, if that fails try a different computer

    • http://iphoneblogr.com thescragster

Also, make sure that the power cable is not plugged into the back of the Apple TV when you are trying to connect it to the computer. Try these solutions an get back to us

      • Andrew

        Hey guys,

Thanks for the help, I have tried both of these already =[
The cable I bought new just to jailbreak my aTV so I’m assuming there’s no problems with it?

I originally attempted it on my 2010 MBP but when that refused to work, I resorted to using my old 2009 MBP and still the same thing. No power cable plugged in, but the aTV does ignite the little white LED briefly…

I’m at a loss as to what it could be! Would love to have tried reverting to iOS 4.1 but I don’t have the necessary files >_<

I JB 4.2.1 on my Iphone 3g succesfully with sn0wbreeze on 6.15 bb (bb not updated). can i unlock it with ultrasn0w now?

    • http://mcmorrisdesigns.com JaeM1llz

      Yes

  • rudy

Yea after i click on restore aka step 12 itunes only gives me the option to download newwest version from apple and install to 4.3 it wont let me choose to restore from my 4.2.1 image , so what now?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

You are supposed to be holding down the shift key while you click restore in order to select a custom firmware. Don’t just click “restore.”

      • rudy

Eh no thats the issue its the alt key not shift

        • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Shift on Windows and Option on Mac

  • rudy

After clicking on the image from pwnagetools 4.1 to restore my phone . IT goes into verifying iphone restore with apple , than after a few seconds it says The iphone could not be restored . The device isn’t eligible for the requested build. Any ideas whats going on here?

    • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

Either you are using the wrong firmware for the device you have, or you don’t have the SHSH backed up for the firmware you are trying to restore to

      • rudy

well my iphone was running on 4.0.1 and i dl the 4.2.1 image since thats the latest crack and i ran my pwnage tools of that image so im not sure if i was supposed to dl the 4.0.1 or update my phone to 4.2.1 first.

        • http://iphoneblogr.com JaeM1llz

You are supposed to use the 4.2.1 update, but like I said, if you don’t have your 4.2.1 SHSH backed up you will not be able to restore it because Apple is no longer signing that firmware which is likely why you got the “eligible build” error.
