Jailbreak iOS 4.1 / 4.2 For iPhone 3GS & iPT 3G Will Come Via Comex’s Userland Jailbreak [updated]

    Hi Guys!

    The Greenpois0n jailbreak has been a very confussing and sometimes complicated thing for many people to understand so I thought I would again, bring some more clarification. This time regarding a jailbreak for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G.

    The SHAtter based GreenPois0n tool is all set to arrive on October 10. But unfortunately, as we mentioned here, it will only jailbreak the fourth-generation devices. These are: The iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 4G and the Apple TV 2G. This limitation is because the exploit SHAtter uses is only compatible with the A4 chip, as we already talked about here.

    Both the members of iPhone and Chronic Dev Teams have confirmed that the creator of Spirit and JailbreakMe, Comex, has more userland exploits in possession which can jailbreak iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G in future. But don’t expect him to release them anytime soon. Since userland exploits can easily be patched by Apple, they are going to wait for Apple to release the final version of iOS 4.2 before releasing the new userland based jailbreak.

    @geraldo72 no, the underlying SHAtter exploit doesn’t work on that device. Wait for the next userland JB from comex for that.

    @Jerometick something like that wouldn’t be before official 4.2 is out (at the very least)

    Also, regarding Greenpois0n's tethered status: The GreenPois0n tool releasing on Sunday is based on SHAtter exploit which was originally a tethered jailbreak. Comex came up with a userland based method to make it untethered in GreenPois0n tool. What this means is that Apple is likely going to patch the bits done by Comex in GreenPois0n which will make GreenPois0n a tethered jailbreak for all the supported devices on iOS 4.2.

    To clarify, when Greenpois0n is released, it will be untethered ("@comex came up with a way to untether it on 4.1/3.2.2") but when Apple releases iOS 4.2, if you upgrade to this firmware, the jailbreak will become tethered.

    The wait will then be for this new userland based jailbreak by Comex which will not only support iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G, but will also make GreenPois0n an untethered jailbreak again for all the fourth-gen devices on iOS 4.2.

    UPDATE: There is currently no ETA, nor has there been any indication of a time frame from Comex. It may take awhile before a userland exploit is found so please, as we mentioned earlier, do not expect anything regarding this anytime soon. We will update you as soon as any more information is released.

    UPDATE 2: Geohot is making a come back to the jailbreaking scene. He will be releasing a jailbreak named Limera1n, this should jailbreak all iOS devices for life (as we thought Greenpois0n would)! This will be great news especially for 3rd-generation iPhone and iPod touch owners. Read all about it here

      So if i get this right.
      - When i jailbreak with greenpois0n on 3.2.2 this will be an unterhed jailbreak, but when i update i will have an jailbroken 4.2 IPad but terhed with all my jailbroken apps?

      - And when comex releases his next tool i will have to run it and then i will have a unterhed jailbroken IPad?

        yes you are right but when you update to 4.2 your all jailbroken apps will be gone so you have to install them again

            yes you can use backup but i guess from backup you wont get your jailbroken apps back but you will get your apps back which are installed from App Store

      Haakon, you will need APT Backup to backup your Cydia apps. Open it and select backup. The download APP Backup, and run a backup for all your iTunes apps. This will save the settings/scores/save points/etc. in your iTunes apps.

      After that run a standard backup through iTunes which will backup your APT Backup and APP Backup settings.

      After you restore your device from your iTunes backup redownload APT Backup and APP Backup and run them but use the restore function this time. It will take a while for APT Backup because it goes through and redownloads all the Cydia apps you used to have. APP Backup is a bit quicker since it only restores settings files and not the actual apps themselves.
