iPhone iOS 4.2 Unlock for iPhone 3G, 3GS (Baseband 05.14.02) Coming Soon!

MuscleNerd has confirmed that an update to ultrasn0w will be made for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users on  and , with the .02 baseband. This released is expected within a few days of iOS 4.2 being released by Apple.

simplysau's question was:

"thanks.. how long would the wait be for 4.2 any approximate time"

MuscleNerd's response was:

"if you're on 3G or 3GS, just a day or 2 at most after 4.2 is public (just enough time to verify stuff)"

Because the baseband for iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4 devices is different it may take slightly longer before an for this baseband is released.

Apple will most likely be releasing the updated firmware, iOS 4.2, in November.

Will we need to jailbreak the 3G to unlock it? I’ve already updated to 05.14.02 but not yet JB. Must I? I’ve also heard that JB slows phone down to a crawl. Is this true?

    • JaeM1llz says:

Yes, you need to jailbreak before you can unlock. But you will not be able to unlock anyway since you updated to 05.14.02 which is not unlockable right now. But yes, you must first jailbreak before you can install the unlock. And no, it is not true that the phone slows down to a crawl because of the jailbreak. My phone is actually faster now that it is jailbroken and the battery life is nearly doubled since I use Auto3G(an application that only jailbroken devices can install).

That’s great. Thanks for the quick response. Will JB now with the method suggested in the Jailbreak Wizard and wait patiently for the impending unlock.

No problem, that’s what we’re here for 🙂 The new unlock should be out within a few days after 4.2 firmware has been released to the public, so within the next month.

Sorry, I’m a neophyte here, but are there any advantages/reasons to update to 4.2? I have a 3gs that is running 4.0 and is JB/unlocked. Thank you.

    • JaeM1llz says:

No, do not update to 4.2. 4.2 isn’t even released to the public yet. You can technically jailbreak 4.2 using redsn0w, but Cydia is not compatible with 4.2 yet so it would be pointless. If you’re going to update at all, update to 4.1 with a prejailbroken firmware

      • BC says:

Sorry, I meant to say is there any reason to update from 4.0.0/5.13.4 to 4.1? Thank you for responding.

If you click on this link here and scroll down to 4.1 you will see the changes they made in the firmware.

My main changes are some big fixes, the addition of Game Centre and that sort of thing. There is no major reason to update to iOS 4.1 if you are happy at iOS 4.0. It’s your decision.

Please do remember that if you do want to update but require a carrier unlock you will need to use the Pwnage Tool to stop your baseband from being updated. Use this tutorial here.

          Hope that helps
